Computer Update!

On 2010/07/21, in Life, by Umbrood

So there is more wrong with my desktop than I first thought, so I need to get a cable for my power supply. And this mystery magical cable isn’t anywhere to be found in this town. So I have ordered it on-line and it arrived today, so after stuffing around with the desktop I found out that probably the entire power supply is actually fried, I will try some more last minute things tomorrow. If that doesn’t work I will try and use and older weaker model power supply if that doesn’t work I will just dismantle the machine for transport and back-up all the HDD to an external drive and sort out a new computer when I have moved.

Buying some more hardware

On 2010/07/14, in Life, by Umbrood

I’ve been looking into getting a few more HDD for when I move so I can take more of my pictures and other stuff with me. The prices for HDD have dropped significantly since I last bought computer parts, so I might get two 2TB HDD so its less things to ship. I need to go through all the random hardware that I have in my basement and see if I can build some functioning machines to leave with my mother, so that she has a computer that can be hooked up to her new TV and media system.

It would be great if she has a machine that she can use Skype with so we can talk cheaply and efficiently while I’m abroad.

So I started writing this yesterday but now things have changed, my main computer has blown out its processor-fan. It turned off several times during the evening and now the fan wont work at all. So I took it apart last night and found out that the fan had been fried and the paste had burned to the CPU.The fan is only a few years old but It probably have been working overtime to keep the CPU cool in this stupidly hot apartment, as It gets evening sun on the living room the temperatures will reach at least 27-28 degrees Celsius.

So I bought a new fan and some chemicals to sort out the CPU later tonight as its stupidly hot today and I want to be focused when I do this. The next computer I build will have water cooling or just passive cooling as I cant be bothered with replacing fans and that stuff anymore.

Just a small update, Wheels 2010.

On 2010/07/08, in Life, by Umbrood

Here are some pictures from this years Wheels in Umeå. It was a sunny and warm day, actually got a bit of a tan happening from being out in the sun. I will start using the gallery option in WordPress until I have decided if im going to pay for a bigger flickr account but probably not until I run out of space on this site, or if I decide to shut this down when I move.

I will start uploading more older pictures here as I have grown tired with Facebook and their substandard site, I rather host my own images than bothering with Facebook at the moment.

UPDATE: Added a few images to the Täfteåfestival post

Täfteåfestivalen

On 2010/06/09, in Life, by Umbrood

This weekend we visited the täfteåfestivalen to watch a friend play, the first gig with a complete set-up with their new band. The weather was good for the most part, luckily one of our friends had brought mosquito replant which we had forgotten. We enjoyed a bottle of wine from the soon too be local wine yard, I need to learn to drink wine as I’m moving to wine country. Actually there is lots of good wines available but I have never been exposed to them until now, all I got to drink before was really sweet and crappy wines which I don’t like at all.

I will publish a few pictures at a  later time, I have reached the limit of my flickr account and don’t feel like paying for more space when I have this webspace to publish pictures.

UPDATE: Added a few images from the festival

Mothers day

On 2010/06/01, in Life, by Umbrood

Sweden celebrated mothers day last weekend, and I surprised my mom with cake. Its not much of a surprise on mothers day but anyhow. Ill include a little film of the cake when I have downloaded it off the Flip.

INSERT MOVIE CLIP HERE

After having a cup of coffee we took a trip to see my grandmother and brought my mom along so we could spend mothers day with two generations of mothers. My grandmother was in good spirit and she was happy to see us all, she hadn’t seen my girlfriend in quite while. She wished us both  good luck with the move and everything, so that was nice. Hopefully the weather is nice the next time we go and visit her so we can bring Loki with us as she likes cats and wanted to see him again. Also we need too bring one of the cookbooks with us, its one with classic Swedish recipes that we are planning on bringing with us when we move, and my grandmother wanted to have a look at it and see what new recipes there are.

We also had a nice conversations about when my mom moved away to work and got too here stories that I haven’t heard before which was nice. Especially one about an old record player and how my grandfather drove a long way to mail her a transistor radio so they could listen to popular music and not just old hymns and stuff like that.

So I choose to get  a Nokia 5800 for my new cellphone, and hopefully I will get it today. I ordered it from the online Collect@Store part of the Elgiganten website, a Nordic electronics gods retailer. I would save around 900:- from booking it online and then going down to the store to collect and pay for the phone, so that was a good deal. But the website is buggy as all hell, the site says that it should take around two hours for the order to be processed and sent to the store, so you can pick up the items. In reality it takes closer to 5-6 hours some time according to the people in the store that I talked too. After I paid for the phone and where on my way to collect it it turned out that the phone wasn’t in stock, and haven’t been for a long time…Still showed up on the website and was able to pay for it in store.

So hopefully it will arrive today and I’m going to get some free swag for all the trouble, hope the phone is worth it in the end.

UPDATE: The phone will arrive tomorrow @10 so no shiny new toys today.

What kind of cellphone?

On 2010/05/24, in Life, Training, by Umbrood

So after looking into more cellphone things, I have narrowed my search to Nokia cellphones for the moment. The models I’m looking into are the X6 and the 5800 model.

The 5800 model has a weaker camera only 3.2 MP same as my old N73 which isn’t bad for a cell phone but not good either. I wanted the phones to have wlan which makes transferring files and syncing so much easier. My current cell phone is not at all good at cable syncing, I have to use a slow ass Bluetooth connection to get it to work properly. The N73 has a faulty cable connection which drops the connection all the freaking time.

The X6 has a 5Mp camera and also got a wlan, it has 16GB built in memory so there is a lot of room for my podcasts and training music. Which brings me to my other big selling point I want a phone that will actually get me out and exercise, in this case running. So the phone needs to have a GPS and I have been looking into the Nokia sports tracking software and thinks its going to be great to keep track of my progress with that. Both these phones support the sports tracking software so they are even at that point, but the X6 has the better camera for taking pictures along the routes. I haven’t actually felt how the phones feel, the shape and weight of them so that is something I will have to check out before making up my mind on which phone if any to get. I haven’t really decided if this is the right time to buy a new phone, or if I should wait until I have finished moving or not.

Here are some of the YouTube clips I looked into while choosing the phone

[

I’m leaning more towards the 5800 as its cheaper than the X6 and it comes with 8GB and can be upgraded to 16GB so that should last me a good while, as I’m currently using about 2GB but that means having to delete stuff every 2 days or so and that’s a real ball ache with the faulty cable on my N73

Getting a new cell phone or…

On 2010/05/20, in Life, by Umbrood

just a better mp3 player. I’m still a few years behind on the whole cell phone and mp3 front never owned a ipod or a touchscreen cell phone. My old Nokia N73 have been crap for the last year or so, I have changed the battery once before and I’m not keen at buying a new on for an old phone. So what kind of cellphone am I looking for, don’t really know, It must be able to preform as a music player hopefully with some kind of cable-remote access. I haven’t switched to Bluetooth headsets yet, and I recently bought a new pair of headphones that would stay attached even while training, so I’m not looking to replace those just yet. So the cell phones I’m looking at are the Nokia 6700 Classic

The thing im not fond of is that it doesn’t support a remote-headset thingy, but the price is right and the phone is quite small and thats always a bonus.

The other phone I have been looking at is the HTC Hero, the brown one is a whole lot cheaper than the other colors so that could be affordable.

But I’m not sure if I rather get an Iphone later on instead of getting an HTC now, not sure if the Blizzard authenticator is available for the Android system yet and that would be a plus. As for an mp3 player that’s up in the air as I don’t know what kind too get, probably just get a cheap one so I don’t have too worry too much.

Now its time for some Starcraft II before the BETA goes down in a week, need to get a few more games done so I can handle being without the BETA for a month.

Paperboxes and all the seven seas

On 2010/05/04, in Life, by Umbrood

Upon deciding that we wouldn’t ship an entire container of stuff, we contacted a few different shipping companies and found that Seven Seas where the one we are going to use. This wasn’t without problems, the shipping company needed to have a credit card with an start date on and not just a expiration date, all the credit cards here in Sweden only has the expiration date. This is because they only allows certain debit cards, and if you use a credit card to book the order there will be a percentage fee on the entire order. So in the end we got stuck using a foreign credit card and getting to pay the extra fee just because we didn’t have the proper English debit card,  but It still going to be cheaper than shipping several boxes from here, as isn’t any good freight company that handles oversea shipping for a reasonable price.

Back to the container things, I contacted at least 5 different freight companies here in Sweden that handled this kinds of transportation. And only ONE replied with a price, another company said they would get back to me with a quote but never did. Don’t they want business from the north of Sweden or what’s their problem? The price I got was for a container to get transported by trailer from Stockholm, wait here to get filled and then driven back down to Stockholm and put on a boat to be shipped. That would have cost around 75k Swedish Crowns. Which was a bit much considering that the shipment wouldn’t be worth that much in the first place.

So the after ordering the Shipping boxes and paying the booking fee, the boxes arrived quickly. And I was pleasantly surprised that the boxes included packing materials, in this case bubble wrap and packing t. And even instructions on how to pack and declare the items in the boxes, as the customs is quite stringent with what they let into the country. And they even included marker pens in the packing materials, but for the price of the boxes they bloody well might include some swag. All this happened a few weeks ago, so now I have gotten further in the planning stage and have brushed up on the customs rules so the boxes could be shipped really  really soon.
