StarCraft II – Countdown!

On 2010/07/22, in Video games, by Umbrood

Got word that my copy of StarCraft II is soon on it’s way. Hopefully I will be able to get a lot of games on battle.net before I move, because I will not have a fast and inexpensive connection for quite a while. But I’m planning on saving the single player campaign for when I have moved so I can play without using up the precious quotas that will be plaguing me.

Zerg builds, take II

On 2010/05/06, in Video games, YouTube, by Umbrood

So the previous build haven’t worked out as I had hoped. I just haven’t gotten the roaches in-mass as I thought i would and relied more on a Zergling/Muta army. This might have to do with the players I have meet or just my ineptitude in getting the build and timed right.

I do feel im getting better at countering certain units but I don’t feel comfortable going into Tier 2 units with Zerg. Need to read about all the units and get a feel for the hard counter system, which I didn’t know existed until I watched a few unit presentations on Youtube. And Im also astounded by the amount of statistics you can get from the replays in StarCraft II. I really liked the mining stats so you can actually see if you current worker saturation is sufficient or not and then tweek your build orders.

Here are some of the Huskys clips with unit presentations

On 2010/05/04, in Video games, by Umbrood

Got to my Terran 25 wins benchmark last night, and now im going to switch to Zerg and see how that goes. The basic Zerg build I’m trying to use is as follows.

  • 10 overlord
  • 13 Spawning Pool, and getting  Gas (3 workers)
  • 15 overlord
  • 14 queen, Zerglings, Roach Warren

Going for the Roach harass, this looked like the build to use.

Starcraft II BETA

On 2010/05/03, in Review, Video games, by Umbrood

So im in yet another beta test so Ill write a little about it here as I have done in the past. I have started playing  Terran and have around 25 matches under my belt and I haven’t gotten all the starter builds sorted and still get owned by early rushes and other things. I need to start doing wall-ins to keep my base going after the initial rush.

My initial thoughts about the game is that its awesome and more high paced than I remembered the original Starcraft, you have to be on the ball all the time or you get steam rolled. getting a quick expansion is a given in my opinion as then you can survive a main base destruction and maybe get a come from behind win, I have managed that a few times. I have played almost 20 games without using the MULE and that kinda shows my knowledge level at the moment, I need to start looking into the different units and all the special abilities. After I get 25 wins under my belt Ill move on the the next race and see what they have to offer, Ill leave you with my current basic Terran buildorder:

  • 9/11 Depot
  • 10/11 SCV
  • 11/11 SCV
  • 11/19 Barracks
  • Get Gas put 3 SCV on gas
  • Comsat up  and use MULE ASAP
  • 12/19 SCV
  • 13/19 Depot
  • 14/19 SCV
  • 14/19 Depot

I have stopped playing World of Warcraft regularly a few years ago, only sporadically returning to Azeroth and only casually playing. The game is still a good game but it doesn’t  capture me as it used too do. I still keep up with the goings on in the game and the community just too see how things are changing, mainly because it interests me how virtual economy works and how the gaming landscape is changing with each year.

So now the Lich King has been defeated and all is well until the next expansion, or something like that. The new things that Blizzard has been experimenting with the last few years are in game cut scenes to make the players feel more involved in the world. As most of the MMO is just a grind fest galore, and don’t bring any sort of story driven game play. I know that you cant expect the same kind of unique game play experience as you get with the single player games, but the gaming companies should try and make there games more fluid and adaptive. The cut scene and the phased content that Blizzard introduced in Wrath of the Lich King made it possible to have limited playing experiences where the world actually changed based upon where in the storyline you where. When you started as the Death Knight the first hero class introduced in the game, you started in a new phased part of the world only able to see other players on the same part of the beginning storyline for the Death Knights. This is the closest any MMO to my knowledge have come to giving an in game single player like experience, there are a few games that have used the same techniques before Blizzard incorporated it into their game.

There where a quest line end that gave you a small cut scene, involving Sylvanas Windrunner singing that came with The Burning Crusade this was the first time Blizzard used this in the actual game.

This was only available to the horde, and Blizzard has always been striving towards equality after they realised that they needed too make Horde and Alliance sides equal. This is both good and bad, if we go back to the early days of WoW there where several distinct differences between the two sides. Horde had the Shaman as an unique class and the Alliance have the Paladin, and several of the classes have unique racial abilities. The most useful of these where the Fear Ward of the Dwarf Priest, this was a very useful ability as many of the raid bosses had a fear mechanic that would make tanking difficult. The most famous was the Onyxia fear that was more difficult to raid on the horde side, due to the lack of Paladin buffs and priest fear ward.

The first big story line that gave you a cut-scene was the Wrath gate storyline in Wrath of the Lich King which was actually a fun little storyline but the drawn out ending wasn’t great it was just a big battle. Sure it was a vital story element, retaking Undercity, the battle you kinda knew that you couldn’t lose.  So all this was just a big cut scene that you could walk through with your friends, but I was memorable and good first effort from blizzard im expecting more of these things to appear in the near future.

So I haven’t been back to Azeroth in the last 6 months and I haven’t been keeping up to date with the latest developments, other that the whiny complaints about the difficulty level being too low and the servers being crap. But I might be returning for a last visit to Azeroth in the near future to just keep me from going insane and taking my mind of the choirs of life and the stress of getting everything done before heading out for greener pastures. I also have the urge to get some Machinima stuff put together but that is after I have edited together the small films from various outings and travels around Norrland.

All day everyday

On 2010/02/11, in RPG, by Umbrood

Why does time go by this fast, It feels like it was yesterday the NFL season started and now its over. Stayed up all night Sunday and watched the Super Bowl maybe Ill do a quick write-up of my thoughts and feelings surrounding the actual pageantry that is the Super Bowl.

On Monday we also experienced a complete party wipe in Complete Masks of Nyarlahotep, so we are taking a 3-4 week break form the campaign while the GM finalizes his contingency plans for our continued investigations. We have played a year and a half so far, with 40 or 41 sessions so we all have had lots of great moments, I’m probably going to do a complete write-up about the actions from my characters perspective and how he viewed the events that lead  up to his untimely demise and all the friends he made and lost during our adventure. The party wipe where semi planned as we had dug ourselves into a big hole which we couldn’t escape alive.

But this small break allows us to run a few one night scenarios, and first up is me running Ghost Lights which I have discussed here before. I just need to sort out all the handouts and book a date for the four players that the adventure demands.

I also have been accepted into the closed Beta for Battlefield: Bad Company II so I have to make some time to play that game as well and post my thoughts on the game barring that the NDA doesn’t forbid it.

Too much sleep and too few drugs.

On 2008/08/13, in Life, by Umbrood

This weekend was interesting, went to nolia this Saturday. For those who don’t know what it is check out this link.

Anyway I was completely knackered and it felt like I was walking around in a glass bowl all day. Hadn’t slept comfortable at all during the night, mostly because I’m not gonna use the sleeping pills regularly any more as I’m getting hooked and that’s not good. Unfortunately there was noting really interesting at Nolia, looked at some bathroom stuff as that’s what I need to sort out first in the apartment. Some high-tech showers caught my eye, those with built in radios, phones and steam-shower things. And they aint that horrendously expensive but I doubt that the electrical system in the apartment can take the strain…

I have just finished hooking up my TV and my speaker system, took a bit of work getting everything sorted but now I have one of my computers hooked up to my wireless network, allowing me to stream media content from my main machine. And I have got the TV and Nintendo Wii hooked up to the sound system as well. The sound card gave me a bit of problems the built in sound card on the media machine where to old or broken as it couldn’t handle the speaker system so I borrowed am external sound card from a friend just to check that the speakers weren’t broken or anything. They worked fine with the external sound card, so I bought a new sound card and installed it on the machine and it turned out that the digital output on that sound card where either broken or could only handle 2.1 sound even though it where supposed to be able to handle 5.1  So I handed in back to the store and got myself a Creative External Sound card and that worked just fine.

And last night I slept for about 12hrs or something like that and I still feel tired and worn, but im sure that will get better as time passes by.
